Heat Pumps and Mini-Splits

Every room, its own climate.

A multi-zone system connects several indoor units to one outdoor unit, so each room gets its own temperature without ducts. It is a strong fit for whole-home ductless comfort.

  • Indoor units: Two to several, each with its own control
  • Outdoor unit: One multi-zone heat pump

The overview

What it is, and why it matters.

Multi-zone mini-splits link two to several indoor units, each with its own thermostat, to a single outdoor heat pump. People choose them for whole-home ductless comfort in older houses, for homes with a mix of heavily used and rarely used rooms and for additions that should not strain the main system.

Nashville HVAC designs multi-zone systems across Middle Tennessee. We calculate loads room by room, choose a combination of indoor units that fits the outdoor unit's capacity range, plan line sets so the outside looks tidy and set controls so zones do not fight. You get a written layout, scope and price.

Why people choose it

Four things done right.

Room-by-room comfort

Each zone is set to what the room needs.

One outdoor unit

Fewer outdoor boxes and a tidier exterior.

Efficient part-load

Inverter compressors ramp down when only one room is on.

Planned layout

Zones, capacities and line routes are designed before work starts.

Good questions

Multi-Zone Mini-Splits: common questions

Is multi-zone better than ducts?

It depends on the house. Where ducts are missing, leaky or hard to add, multi-zone can be the best answer. Where good ducts exist, a ducted system can be simpler.

Can I run just one room at a time?

Yes. Each indoor unit is independent, so you can condition only the rooms you use.
